From October 1964 the Shinkansen runs at 210 km/h between Tokyo and Osaka.
Open in the interactive tree →The Tokaido Shinkansen opened on 1 October 1964 for the Olympic Games; the TGV (1981) and ICE (1991) followed. Electric drive, dedicated tracks and modern signalling allow 250-350 km/h. On routes up to about 800 kilometres high-speed trains take market share from aircraft in many places.
