Governed Planetary Cooling

A tested, internationally governed way to reflect a little sunlight for a limited time, used alongside emissions cuts and CO2 removal and phased out as the CO2 level falls.

Open in the interactive tree →

It would exist only if models, monitoring and treaties are in place before anyone uses it. It would lower temperatures but not CO2, so ocean acidification and the need to cut emissions would remain.

What it brings

  • Limit the height of a temperature overshoot while CO2 is brought back down
  • Protect heat-sensitive ecosystems and regions during the overshoot
  • A pre-agreed, reversible response to a climate emergency
