From Sojourner (1997) to Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity and Perseverance, rovers showed that ancient Mars was wet and habitable.
Open in the interactive tree →NASA's Sojourner, a 10-kg rover that landed with Mars Pathfinder on 4 July 1997, showed that wheeled robots could explore another planet. Spirit and Opportunity (landed January 2004) found minerals formed in water, and Opportunity kept driving until 2018; Curiosity (2012) found an ancient lake environment with the chemical ingredients for life, and Perseverance (2021) caches samples for return to Earth.
