HIV identified
Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier isolated the AIDS virus in 1983, two years after the first cases, which made blood tests and drug targets possible.
Open in the interactive tree →The retrovirus, later named HIV, was grown from a patient's lymph node at the Pasteur Institute; antibody tests to screen donated blood followed in 1985. The two shared the 2008 Nobel Prize with Harald zur Hausen.
