Atomism (Democritus)
Leucippus and Democritus propose that everything consists of indivisible atoms moving in a void.
Open in the interactive tree →The idea was a philosophical argument, not an experiment, and Aristotle rejected it; Epicurus and Lucretius kept it alive. Dalton revived it in 1808 with measurable atomic weights, and chemistry and physics confirm it in modified form.
