Hohmann Transfer Orbits
Walter Hohmann shows in 1925 that the cheapest path between two circular orbits is an ellipse touching both, with two short engine burns.
Open in the interactive tree →His book 'Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper' worked out orbital transfers before any rocket reached space. Hohmann transfers, with gravity assists, are the basis of nearly all satellite and planetary mission design.
