Kepler Space Telescope

NASA's Kepler telescope (launched 2009) watches 150,000 stars for the tiny dimming of passing planets and finds thousands.

Kepler showed that planets are common and that small rocky worlds in the habitable zone exist around many stars. It turned exoplanets from curiosities into a statistical science.
