Quantum Teleportation
The quantum state of a particle is transferred to another particle far away, using entanglement plus an ordinary message. Matter does not move, and nothing travels faster than light.
Open in the interactive tree →Proposed in 1993 by Charles Bennett and colleagues and first shown with photons in Innsbruck in 1997 (Bouwmeester, Pan, Zeilinger and others). In 2017 the Micius satellite team teleported photon states from a ground station in Tibet to orbit, over links of up to 1,400 km. The original state is always destroyed in the process (no-cloning theorem). It is the basic operation of a future quantum internet; Anton Zeilinger shared the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics for pioneering quantum information science.
