Windmill
Wind is harnessed on purpose for the first time: grinding, drainage and sawing, even where there is no river.
Open in the interactive tree →Horizontal windmills are documented in Persia from the early Middle Ages; in Europe post mills appear from about 1180 in England and Normandy. The Dutch later used them to pump whole regions dry. The windmill is the direct ancestor of today's wind turbine.
