Electrolysis (Davy, Faraday)
Davy uses Volta's battery to split compounds and isolates sodium and potassium (1807); Faraday gives the laws of electrolysis.
Open in the interactive tree →Within weeks of Volta's pile in 1800, Nicholson and Carlisle split water into hydrogen and oxygen. In 1807-08 Humphry Davy isolated potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and other metals that no furnace could free from their compounds. Faraday's laws (1833-34) tied the amount of material to the electric charge, and electrolysis became the basis of electroplating, aluminium production and today's hydrogen electrolysers.
