Turbojet Engine
Whittle and von Ohain (1937-39) make a gas turbine drive an aircraft by pure jet thrust, opening the road to jet travel.
Open in the interactive tree →A compressor, a combustion chamber and a turbine replace the piston engine and propeller. Frank Whittle's test engine ran in April 1937, Hans von Ohain's engine powered the Heinkel He 178 on 27 August 1939, and the Messerschmitt Me 262 became the first operational jet fighter in 1944. After the war the same design led to the jet airliner.
