Gyrocompass & Autopilot
A spinning gyroscope finds true north without magnetism (Anschütz, 1908), and Sperry's autopilot (1912) uses gyros to steer.
Open in the interactive tree →Gyroscopic instruments work on iron ships, aircraft and submarines where magnetic compasses fail. The same principle later gave guidance to rockets and inertial navigation for ships, aircraft and spacecraft.
