Newspapers & the Public Sphere
Weekly printed news sheets (Strasbourg, 1605) create a reading public that follows events beyond its own town and debates them.
Open in the interactive tree →Johann Carolus began selling a printed weekly, the Relation, in Strasbourg in 1605; London got its first daily paper in 1702. Merchants had long traded handwritten news letters, and print made the same news cheap for everyone. When England let press licensing lapse in 1695, newspapers and coffeehouses became places where citizens argued about politics and trade, forming public opinion outside court and church.
