Magna Carta
English barons force King John to accept that the ruler himself is bound by law.
Open in the interactive tree →The charter of 1215 promised protection against unlawful imprisonment and arbitrary taxes and was reissued many times; most clauses were soon repealed, but the principles of rule of law and consent to taxation lasted. It influenced the English Bill of Rights, the US Constitution and modern human rights texts.
