HPV vaccine
Gardasil, approved in 2006, protects against the HPV types that cause most cervical cancers; it is among the first vaccines to prevent a cancer.
Open in the interactive tree →Harald zur Hausen showed in the early 1980s that HPV types 16 and 18 cause cervical cancer (Nobel Prize 2008). A 2024 Scottish study found no cervical cancers among women fully vaccinated at age 12-13.
