Vaccination
Edward Jenner showed that cowpox protects against smallpox, founding the idea of immunisation.
Open in the interactive tree →Inoculation against smallpox existed in Asia and the Ottoman Empire earlier, but in 1796 Edward Jenner deliberately gave a boy cowpox and later showed he resisted smallpox. Louis Pasteur extended the principle to chicken cholera, anthrax and rabies (1885). Vaccination led to the World Health Organization declaring smallpox eradicated in 1980, the only human disease wiped out so far.
