Open in the interactive tree →On 16 October 1846 William Morton demonstrated ether at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and chloroform followed in 1847. Operations that had to be finished in minutes on patients held down could now be slow and careful. Anesthesia made modern surgery possible.
