The EU's General Data Protection Regulation (applied May 2018) gives people rights over their personal data and binds firms worldwide.
Open in the interactive tree →Building on the Hesse state law of 1970, the EU directive of 1995 and the Charter of Fundamental Rights, it introduced consent rules, rights to access and deletion and fines of up to 4% of global turnover. It became a template for laws elsewhere and underlies the platform and AI rules that followed.
