Musical Notation
Guido of Arezzo's staff notation (about 1025) lets singers learn music from writing, so compositions can be kept and exchanged.
Open in the interactive tree →Neumes had marked melodies since the 9th century; Guido added lines that fix pitch and taught sight-singing with syllables such as ut-re-mi. Staff notation made complex polyphony possible and is still in use.
