Nuclear Accidents & Safety Turn
Three Mile Island (1979) and Chernobyl (1986) stalled new reactor orders in the US and drove international safety conventions and the operators' network WANO.
Open in the interactive tree →Three Mile Island (28 March 1979, INES level 5) was followed by 52 US reactor cancellations from 1980 to 1984; Chernobyl (26 April 1986, INES level 7) led to the IAEA convention on early notification of an accident (September 1986) and to the World Association of Nuclear Operators (May 1989). Fukushima Daiichi (2011) later reached the same level 7.
