Tokamak & Stellarator
Magnetic bottles for hot plasma: in 1968 the Soviet tokamak T-3 reaches temperatures needed for fusion.
Open in the interactive tree →Since the hydrogen bomb of 1952 people wanted to use fusion in a controlled way. Lyman Spitzer designed the stellarator in 1951; in 1968 the Soviet tokamak T-3 showed plasma temperatures of about 10 million degrees, which British scientists confirmed in 1969. JET in England reached 16 MW of fusion power from 24 MW of heating power (Q = 0.67) in 1997, a long-standing record.
