Fraunhofer: Lines & Gratings
Joseph von Fraunhofer maps hundreds of dark lines in the Sun's spectrum (1814), makes top-quality optical glass and builds diffraction gratings (1821).
Open in the interactive tree →His precisely calibrated lenses and gratings turned optics into a measuring science. The spectral lines he mapped were later explained by Kirchhoff and Bunsen and opened spectroscopy.
