Puddling & Rolling Mills
Henry Cort's puddling furnace and grooved rolls (1783-84) turn brittle pig iron into tough wrought iron bars and rails in bulk.
Open in the interactive tree →Cort's two patents replaced hammering by hand with stirring molten iron in a coal-fired furnace and shaping it between rollers. The tough rolled iron made rails, girders and ship plate available at scale.
