Centrifugal Governor
James Watt's flyball governor (1788) holds an engine at constant speed by feedback, the first widely used automatic controller.
Open in the interactive tree →Spinning weights open a valve less as the engine speeds up, so the machine regulates itself. Maxwell's analysis of governors in 1868 started control theory, which later grew into servo systems and cybernetics.
