Seed Drill
Jethro Tull's horse-drawn seed drill (1701) sows seed in rows at an even depth instead of scattering it by hand.
Open in the interactive tree →Seeders existed earlier in Mesopotamia and China, and Tull's drill revived them in Europe. Row sowing saved seed, raised yields and allowed hoeing between rows.
Prerequisites
- The plough~3500 BC
Unlocks
- Crop rotation (Norfolk system)~1730Row sowing allowed hoeing; turnip and clover rotations spread with the drill
