Screw Propeller & Iron Hull
Brunel's SS Great Britain (1843) is the first large ocean liner with an iron hull and a screw propeller instead of paddle wheels.
Open in the interactive tree →Screw propellers sit below the waterline and work in rough seas, and iron hulls are stronger and larger than wooden ones. The combination became the basis for all later steel steamships and motor ships.
