Mendel's laws of heredity
Crossing pea plants showed that traits are inherited as separate units that follow statistical rules.
Open in the interactive tree →Gregor Mendel, an Augustinian friar in Brno, counted traits across thousands of pea plants and published the ratios in 1866. He inferred discrete hereditary factors, later called genes, that combine in predictable proportions. His work was ignored for 34 years, was rediscovered in 1900 and became the foundation of genetics.
