Chromosome theory of heredity
Genes sit in a line on chromosomes, which explains how traits are passed on and sometimes inherited together.
Open in the interactive tree →Walter Sutton and Theodor Boveri proposed around 1902 that Mendel's factors lie on chromosomes. Thomas Hunt Morgan's fruit-fly group proved it from 1910 and published the first genetic maps in The Mechanism of Mendelian Heredity (1915); Morgan received the 1933 Nobel Prize. Heredity now had a physical address inside the cell.
