Bayliss and Starling showed in 1902 that a gut chemical travels in the blood to trigger the pancreas; in 1905 Starling named such messengers hormones.

Secretin made the pancreas release digestive juice even with its nerves cut, which broke the rule that only nerves coordinate organs. Blood-borne messengers were soon found for the adrenal glands, thyroid, ovaries and pancreas (insulin).
