Modern evolutionary synthesis
In the 1930s-40s population genetics fused Darwin's selection with Mendel's genes into one theory of evolution.
Open in the interactive tree →Ronald Fisher, J.B.S. Haldane and Sewall Wright showed mathematically in the 1920s-30s that natural selection acting on Mendelian genes can drive evolution; Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ernst Mayr, George Gaylord Simpson and others added field and fossil evidence. Julian Huxley's book 'Evolution: The Modern Synthesis' (1942) gave the result its name. Evolution now had a clear mechanism, and genes became the unit of inheritance to be studied.
