Radio (Wireless Telegraphy)
Hertz proves electromagnetic waves, and Marconi turns them into message transmission without wires, even across the Atlantic.
Open in the interactive tree →Heinrich Hertz demonstrated Maxwell’s electromagnetic waves in 1886-88. From 1895 Guglielmo Marconi sent signals over ever longer distances and in December 1901 received a signal from Cornwall in Newfoundland; he won the Nobel Prize in 1909. Radio made ships, later aircraft and vehicles reachable.
