Rechargeable Battery
The lead-acid battery stores electricity chemically and can be recharged - electricity becomes storable.
Open in the interactive tree →After Volta's pile of 1800, a rechargeable battery was the next step: Gaston Plante built the first lead-acid cell in 1859. It still starts combustion engines and buffers backup power systems. All later batteries up to the lithium-ion cell follow the same principle: store charge chemically and call it back later.
