Dynamo & Electric Motor
From Faraday's disc (1831) to Siemens' self-exciting dynamo (1866), machines convert motion into current and back.
Open in the interactive tree →Faraday's disc generator of 1831 proved that induction can make current from motion. Siemens' dynamo-electric principle (1866-67) and Gramme's ring dynamo (1871) made generators strong and cheap enough for lamps and factories. The electric motor, which runs the same principle in reverse, replaced belt-and-shaft drives in workshops; every power station and electric vehicle still turns on this pairing.
