AC Induction Motor
A motor with no electrical contact to its rotor (Ferraris, Tesla, 1885-88) runs straight from AC power and became the workhorse of industry.
Open in the interactive tree →Galileo Ferraris and Nikola Tesla independently built rotating-field motors in the 1880s, and Dolivo-Dobrowolsky's three-phase version of 1889 became the industrial standard. Cheap, rugged and maintenance-light, such motors now use a large share of the world's electricity.
