The adult rate rose from 86% to 88% between 2015 and 2024. Women make up 466 million of the non-literate adults, nearly two thirds; more than half (441 million) live in just ten countries, including India, China, Pakistan, Nigeria and Bangladesh. The number fell from 754 million (2023) to 739 million (2024), largely because of revised UN population estimates and an upward update for India.

As of October 2026

UNESCO's 2025 fact sheet puts 739 million adults without basic literacy in 2024, and its International Literacy Day 2026 page still cites that figure; Central and Southern Asia rose from 72% to 77%, sub-Saharan Africa from 65% to 69%. The 2026 Global Education Monitoring Report counts 273 million children and youth out of school (about 17%, stable since 2015), and only 58% reach minimum reading proficiency at the end of primary school.

  • LLMs for 500+ minority languages Medium AI leverageTrain and fine-tune language models on minority languages so speakers get education and medical advice in their mother tongue.
  • Mobile LLMs for offline learning Medium AI leverageDistil and quantize models to run offline on cheap smartphones (2 GB RAM) in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
  • AI-assisted lesson planning for teachers Medium AI leverageDevelop systems where teachers use AI to generate and adapt lesson plans, quizzes and feedback in real time.

Where AI could help

Low AI leverage. Literacy gains need teachers, schools, languages and funding; AI tutors and speech tools help at the margins where tested.

  • Speech-recognition reading checks in local languages to find pupils who struggle
  • Teacher-supervised AI tutoring in low-resource schools
  • Translation and content generation in under-served languages

Shown so far

  • In June and July 2024 a World Bank randomized trial in Nigerian secondary schools found a six-week teacher-supervised GPT-4 after-school English program raised test scores by about 0.3 standard deviations. source
