First protein structure
John Kendrew solved the 3D structure of myoglobin by X-ray crystallography in 1958; Max Perutz followed with haemoglobin.
Open in the interactive tree →John Kendrew's team in Cambridge reported the first atomic-scale model of a protein, sperm-whale myoglobin, in 1958 (finer detail in 1960), while Max Perutz solved haemoglobin; both shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. It showed that proteins fold into precise shapes that explain their function. Such structures grew into the Protein Data Bank, the training data of today's AI structure prediction.
