Telomeres and the Hayflick limit
Hayflick found in 1961 that normal human cells divide only about 40 to 60 times; telomere shortening and telomerase (1985) explained why. Nobel Prize 2009.
Open in the interactive tree →Hayflick and Moorhead's cultures refuted Carrel's claim that cells are immortal. Greider and Blackburn found telomerase in 1985, an enzyme that rebuilds chromosome ends, and shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Szostak.
