Songbirds learn their songs

Thorpe (1954) and Marler (1970) showed that songbirds learn their songs by hearing adults early in life, which made birdsong a standard model of vocal learning.

Thorpe followed chaffinch song with the sound spectrograph; birds raised in isolation sang abnormal, simpler songs. A 1999 review lists many parallels with human speech learning but notes that birdsong lacks language's capacity for meaning and abstraction.
