Genome-wide association studies
The first genome-wide association study (2005, an eye disease) compared DNA variants of patients and controls, opening gene mapping of common diseases.
Open in the interactive tree →Klein and colleagues linked a variant in the complement factor H gene to age-related macular degeneration; the 2007 Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium then tested seven common diseases. Thousands of associations have since been found, each with a small effect.
