Human microbiome
The NIH Human Microbiome Project, launched in 2007, used DNA sequencing to map the microbes on and in healthy people; its first results appeared in 2012.
Open in the interactive tree →The 2012 papers sampled 242 healthy adults at up to 18 body sites and showed that healthy people differ widely in their microbes. Studies of how gut microbes relate to immunity, drugs and disease followed.
