High-Energy Neutrino Astronomy
IceCube, a cubic kilometre of Antarctic ice with light sensors, reported high-energy cosmic neutrinos in 2013; Halzen won the 2026 Physics Nobel.
Open in the interactive tree →Finished in December 2010 with 86 sensor strings between 1,450 and 2,450 m depth, IceCube reported 28 likely extraterrestrial neutrinos in November 2013 and in 2018 traced a neutrino from September 2017 to the blazar TXS 0506+056. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics went to Francis Halzen for decisive contributions to IceCube and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
