Tsunami Warning Systems (DART)
After the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed about 228,000 people, deep-ocean pressure sensors (DART) and a regional warning system were built.

NOAA's DART buoys, first deployed as a prototype in 1995, link a seafloor pressure recorder by sound to a surface buoy and by satellite to shore; the US array reached 39 stations in 2008, and a UNESCO-led Indian Ocean system became active in June 2006.
