Communications Satellites
Telstar (1962) and geostationary satellites from 1964 carry telephone and television around the globe without cables.
Open in the interactive tree →Telstar 1 relayed the first television pictures across the Atlantic in July 1962. Syncom 3 (1964) hovered geostationary over the Pacific and carried the Tokyo Olympics, and Intelsat I “Early Bird” followed in 1965. Satellites stayed expensive and slow for decades, until mega-constellations in low orbit changed that.
