Baran (US) and Davies (UK) split messages into small packets that find their own way through a network, unlike a phone call that holds a line.

Donald Davies named the idea 'packet' in 1965 and built a test network at the National Physical Laboratory. Packet switching made data networks robust and efficient and is the base design of the ARPANET and the internet.
