Echo Sounding & Sonar
Alexander Behm patents the echo sounder in 1913; ultrasonic sonar (Langevin, 1917) follows. Sound lets ships measure depth and find objects underwater.
Open in the interactive tree →Time a sound pulse takes to return from the seabed gives depth in seconds, replacing weighted lines. Sonar profiles built the first detailed maps of the ocean floor.
