Humpback whale song described

Payne and McVay's 1971 Science paper showed that humpback sounds form songs of 7 to 30 minutes that repeat with great precision; what they are for was unknown.

The recordings came from a Navy engineer's hydrophone station off Bermuda that listened for submarines. The 1970 album Songs of the Humpback Whale sold widely, and the songs are credited with helping to build support for whale protection.
