Optical Glass (Schott & Abbe)
Otto Schott, Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss found the Jena glass laboratory in 1884 to melt new glass types designed for lens makers.
Open in the interactive tree →By adding boron, barium and phosphorus to glass, Schott made glasses with new combinations of refraction and dispersion. They allowed the apochromatic lenses of the 1880s and later the precision optics of cameras, microscopes and chip-making machines.
