Heliocentric world view
Copernicus put the Sun at the centre and Kepler found elliptical orbits; Earth became one planet among others.
Open in the interactive tree →Nicolaus Copernicus' De revolutionibus (1543, printed in Nuremberg) started the revolution. Kepler's laws (1609, 1619) replaced circles with ellipses using Tycho Brahe's precise naked-eye data. The heavens were shown to obey calculable rules, which prepared Newton's gravity.
