Satellite mega-constellations

Several competing constellations of thousands of satellites now crowd low Earth orbit; Starlink alone has more than 11,000 up, raising problems for astronomy, orbital debris and radio spectrum.

Cheap, reusable launches made constellations economical; SpaceX began launching Starlink in May 2019. Amazon (Leo, formerly Kuiper) and China's Qianfan and Guowang are building rivals.

As of October 2026

On 7 October 2026 the KeepTrack tracker listed 11,156 Starlink satellites in orbit (12,988 launched since 2019, about 1,832 already de-orbited). In July 2026 it counted about 400 satellites for Amazon Leo, 240 for China's Qianfan and 190 for Guowang. The growth raises problems for astronomy, orbital debris and radio spectrum.

Open steps

  • Kessler syndrome avoidance Medium AI leverageDevelop collision avoidance, deorbiting and manoeuvre coordination for mega-constellations to prevent cascading collisions.
  • Frequency coordination via ML Medium AI leverageUse machine learning to detect and coordinate frequency use among overlapping mega-constellations, minimizing interference.
  • Low-latency satellite internet routing Medium AI leverageDevelop ML-based traffic engineering to route packets through dynamic constellation topology, competing with ground fiber.

Where AI could help

Low AI leverage. Rollout depends on launches, factories, spectrum and licences; AI mainly helps automate collision avoidance and clean up astronomy images.

  • Automate conjunction screening and manoeuvre decisions for thousands of satellites
  • Optimise beam and spectrum use between constellations to cut interference
  • Remove satellite streaks from astronomical images
  • Predict satellite failures early so dead units can be de-orbited

Shown so far

  • In August 2025, ESA reported that its CREAM prototype automates conjunction assessment and manoeuvre planning on the ground, though ESA does not describe it as machine learning. source
