Moore's Law
Gordon Moore observes that the number of transistors per chip doubles regularly: the metronome of the computer industry.
Open in the interactive tree →In 1965 Moore predicted a yearly doubling of transistor counts, revised in 1975 to every two years. The observation became a roadmap that factories and suppliers organized around: from the Intel 4004 (1971, 2,300 transistors) to chips with well over 100 billion transistors today. Clock speeds have stalled since the mid-2000s because Dennard scaling ended.
